This approach works exceedingly well in making the characters stick in mind. Elizabeth Wein has taken the approach to peel off layers from a character, as the story progresses, and to let the reader discover their complexities, and inherent contradictions. This look would be easy to put together with a bomber jacket, aviator inspired hat, scarf and some sort of goggles. It was really inspiring and these woman were kickass. Despite the amazing story itself, I loved learning about how important female pilots were in the war. For example, Paul is the soul of the Resistance, but he is an inveterate philanderer. Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein: This book is one of my all time favorites. The other characters, like Engel, Jamie, and Paul, are wonderful too. We learn of her life and challenges through Verity's notes and later, from her own. Maddie's character is equally well portrayed. Verity is easily one of the strongest, capable and sympathetic characters I have encountered. Learning about her life, friendship with Maddie, and her innermost thoughts, completes making her a hero, in our minds. Her commitment and bravery start to come through. But as we continue to read more of these notes, we see the brutality involved in interrogating Verity. Its the first of many enlightening experiences as she tries. Since this is at odds with the usual portrayal of a hero, it makes her character not so likeable. As THE PEARL THIEF opens, 15-year-old Lady Julia Beaufort-Stuart arrives at her late grandfathers estate in Scotland a few days earlier than expected - which is why, when shes bashed over the head by an unknown assailant and lands in the hospital, no one knows who she is for days. Verity is trading secrets for some marginal comfort and her life. She seems to be broken by the Gestapo torture.

In Verity's notes, she comes across as a weak individual, initially. The characters are memorable and lifelike with Verity & Maddie being, of course, the stars of the show.
